Two Classic South African Recipes to Try at Home
Bobotie – The National Dish of South Africa
This Cape Malay-inspired dish is the ultimate comfort food, spiced minced beef baked with a creamy, golden egg topping. Sweet, savoury, and beautifully fragrant.
Ingredients:
- 450-500g minced beef or lamb
 - 1 onion, finely chopped
 - 2 slices white bread, soaked in milk
 - 1 tbsp curry powder
 - 1 tsp turmeric
 - 2 tbsp apricot chutney
 - 2 eggs
 - 250ml milk
 - Salt and pepper to taste
 
Method:
- Preheat oven to 180°C.
 - Sauté onion until soft, then add mince and cook until browned.
 - Mix in curry powder, turmeric, chutney, and salt.
 - Squeeze out bread and stir it into the mince.
 - Spread mixture in an oven dish.
 - Beat eggs and milk together, pour over the top.
 - Bake for 30–40 minutes until golden and set.
 
Serve with yellow rice and raisins, a South African classic.
Malva Pudding – A Sweet South African Favourite
A rich, sticky sponge pudding served warm with a creamy sauce, perfect after a Sunday roast.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup flour
 - 1 cup sugar
 - 1 egg
 - 1 tbsp apricot jam
 - 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
 - 1 tbsp butter
 - 1 tsp vinegar
 - 1 cup milk
 
Sauce:
- 1 cup cream
 - ½ cup butter
 - ½ cup sugar
 - ½ cup hot water
 - 1 tsp vanilla extract
 
Method:
- Preheat oven to 180°C and grease a baking dish.
 - Mix egg and sugar until light, then beat in jam.
 - Melt butter and add with vinegar and milk.
 - Stir in sifted flour and bicarbonate of soda.
 - Pour into dish and bake for 35–40 minutes.
 - For the sauce, heat all ingredients until melted and combined.
 - Pour over pudding as soon as it comes out of the oven.
 
Serve warm with custard or vanilla ice cream, it’s South African heaven!
